Studio Notes - Summer 2025

A drawing in progress of woods in Maine, specifically Deer Isle.  It is charcoal on wood, 4’ x 6’.

The longer I live in Maine, the more easily I have come to call it home.  I am still awestruck by the shoreline, the islands, the rocks, the forests, but also the folks who live here.  Common sense is not an endangered beast.  Interdependence generally overcomes what’s-in-it-for-me-ism.  Artists can feel a sense of supportive community and entrepreneurs can make a go of it.  It’s not Paradise but it’s pretty swell.  I feel quite fortunate.

To read

I was pleased to have been included in a short article in Decor Maine magazine at the suggestion of Maine Crafts Association.  They didn’t list gallery affiliations and so did not mention Cove Street Arts in Portland, Maine but you can see the show that this work was in here.

To see

I taught an online course earlier this year for Fibre Arts Take Two out of Australia.  It was an amazing experience with 295 students from around the world.  At the end of the course, Fibre Arts Take Two curated an online exhibition and also have made it available in printed form.  Take a look at the lovely work that was selected for the show.  I’m so proud of these artists!  The course, Finding, will be repeated next winter.

To do

I had coffee with an old friend today.  We hadn’t seen each other in months because of various seemingly important life interruptions but made the effort to get together this morning.  It was both grounding and uplifting.  Seems like a physical impossibility, doesn’t it?  I suggest that you get in touch with someone you haven’t spent time with in awhile and just enjoy the solace of friendship revisited.

Coming up

An exhibition with fellow artists Jane Sauer, Jo Stealey and Carol Stein at 108 Contemporary in Tulsa, Oklahoma.  The four of us have been friends for many years, each working in her own way in contemporary basketry.  Still is the name of the show and you can see something about it here

Summer seems to be flying by here in the northern hemisphere.  The days are getting the slightest bit shorter and we have turned the corner from flowering peonies to stalwart daylilies in the garden.  But while it’s here, we enjoy it.  I hope the same for you, in whatever season you find yourself.

All best,

Lissa
